Punxsutawney Phil has made his prediction – there’s no sense arguing…he is a groundhog after all. Phil was coaxed from his den on Wednesday last week and according to sources, “communicated in ‘groundhogese’ that he saw his shadow”. So, six more weeks of winter is on its way – however we can all take solace in the fact that Phil has only been correct 40% of the time over the past decade. Recurring Winter Events/Activities
- Visit the Lake Lodge Recreation Center for some ice-skating or snowshoeing on Lake Winona. They’re open Monday-Friday from 4:00-7:00pm and on Saturday/Sunday from 1:00-7:00pm. A winter seasonal pass is just $15. Snowshoes, ice skates, broomball sticks, and hockey sticks can be rented on a daily rate from the Lodge.
- Strap on your snowshoes & explore Winona’s enchanting trails. Winona features a number of in-town parks and trails as well as nearby State Parks that offer both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Check out more information from Visit Winona and plan your next great excursion!
- Ice Skate at the Bud King Ice Arena (670 E Front St) in Winona. The Bud King Ice Arena features a new indoor ice refrigeration system and outdoor ice rink that overlook the beautiful Mississippi River. The arena is managed by the Winona Area Youth Hockey Association (WAYHA). For more information on open skate times, skating lessons, and hockey programs, visit the WAYHA website.

February 7: 5:00pm: Frozen River Film Festival – Observations at 65 degrees South: The Frozen River Film Festival will feature a showing of “Observations at 65 Degrees South” at the Winona Arts Center (228 E 5th St). A team of nine rogue scientists embark on a journey to Antarctica. Their choice of transport: a small sailboat. Stop down to the Arts Center on Monday for a full screening!
February 10: 7:00-8:30pm: Water Music: Chamber Concerts at MMAM w/the Winona Symphony Orchestra: Enjoy a chamber music concert in an intimate, refined setting among the galleries. Take in the musical masterworks of this live performance while also spotlighting the visual treasures of MMAM. Tickets are on-sale through the MMAM website.
February 11: 11:00am-5:30pm: WNB Financial Chili Tasting: Warm up with some hot chili and support a great cause, Ready Set School. The event is drive-thru style at Steak Shop Catering. Lunch runs from 11:00am-1:00pm and dinner from 4:30-5:30pm. The bagged meal includes 3 types of chili (traditional beef, southwest brisket, chicken chili), a Bloedow’s roll, cookie, and chili toppings. Meal tickets are $10 in advance or $12 the day of the event. Visit Ready Set School to order tickets!
February 12: 5:00-7:30pm: Luminary Snowshoe Hike & Film Set: Enjoy this casual snowshoe experience at the Prairie Island Campground (1120 Prairie Island Rd), perfect for the whole family, as you hike the trails lit with twinkling luminaries and bonfires sponsored by local supporting businesses! This event is free, and snowshoes are available for all ages & sizes. Volunteers will be on-hand to assist with snowshoe questions and fitting. Snowshoeing and films, courtesy of the Frozen River Film Festival, begin at 5:00pm. Vegetarian & meat chili from The Boathouse as well as hot & cold beverages will be available for purchase.
