Monday is President’s Day! Did you know that the official federal holiday is commonly referred to as Washington’s Birthday? Which is odd considering that President’s Day is observed annually on the 3rd Monday of February and George Washington’s birthday is on February 22nd. To further complicate matters, Washington was technically born on February 11, 1731. Confused, yet? Washington was born when the Julian calendar was in use. During Washington’s lifetime, people in Great Britain and America switched the official calendar system from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. As a result, those born before 1752 were told to add 11 days to their birth dates and those born between January 1 and March 25, should also add one year to be in sync with the new calendar. In summary, Washington’s birthday is February 22, 1732. Recurring Winter Events/Activities
- Visit the Lake Lodge Recreation Center for some ice-skating or snowshoeing on Lake Winona. They’re open Monday-Friday from 4:00-7:00pm and on Saturday/Sunday from 1:00-7:00pm. A winter seasonal pass is just $15. Snowshoes, ice skates, broomball sticks, and hockey sticks can be rented on a daily rate from the Lodge.
- Strap on your snowshoes & explore Winona’s enchanting trails. Winona features a number of in-town parks and trails as well as nearby State Parks that offer both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Check out more information from Visit Winona and plan your next great excursion!
- Ice Skate at the Bud King Ice Arena (670 E Front St) in Winona. The Bud King Ice Arena features a new indoor ice refrigeration system and outdoor ice rink that overlook the beautiful Mississippi River. The arena is managed by the Winona Area Youth Hockey Association (WAYHA). For more information on open skate times, skating lessons, and hockey programs, visit the WAYHA website.

Make Wednesday night pizza night and help out WSU’s Nursing Club in the process.
February 24: 7:00-7:45pm: A live Virtual Admission & Warrior Life Session with WSU: For those who are not yet students of Winona State, but are considering it, attend a virtual engagement with Winona State on Thursday night. The LIVE Virtual Admissions & Warrior Life Session with WSU is a live information session followed by the opportunity to chat with an Admissions Counselor. February 25: 5:00am-5:00pm: Customer Appreciation Day at WAV Nutrition (619 Huff St): This is a celebration of YOU!! WAV Nutrition will be giving back all day, you don’t want to miss it. Buy 1 get 1 half off any lit tea. Raffles will be held for product giveaways.
